Drink-driving man caused own wife's death

Former safety officer, Bobby Elfian Mokhtar, 29, was driving while under the influence of alcohol along Raffles Boulevard on 1st April 2012 at about 8am.

The court heard that he did not have proper control of his Toyota Vios car, causing it to veer to the left and side swipe against a stationary lorry on the extreme lane. The car then lurched forward and hit the back of a stationary SMRT bus.

As a result of his negligence, the father of two caused the death of his own wife, Ms Siti Norliza Mohamed Hamid, 25, when she got  trapped in the front passenger seat.

The impact caused the front of the car completely caved inwards. Ms Siti Norliza was trapped at the front passenger seat with an open wound across her abdomen. The bus had to be moved forward and left car door pried open to extricate her. She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 8.22am.

For causing his wife's death by negligence, he was jailed for six weeks on Tuesday. He was also banned from driving for six years for drink driving.
