Police have arrested a 46 year-old man for committing several of break-ins at residential units in Compassvale estate. The arrest was made through the assistance of an off-duty police officer from Police Coast Guard (PCG).
On 5 September 2012 at about 9.35 am, a 36 year-old victim was in his kitchen when he spotted an unidentified male suspect reaching for his laptop bag through the main gate of his HDB unit at Compassvale estate.
The victim shouted at the suspect who then ran off with the victim’s laptop bag. The commotion attracted the attention of an off-duty police officer, Sgt Zhang Xu Kun who lives nearby and gave chase along with the victim.
The suspect was eventually detained following a short chase and the bag, containing victim’s laptop valued at about $2000, was also recovered.
In the course of the investigations, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established that the culprit is believed to be involved for two other similar cases in the said estate whereby laptops, hand phones and valuables worth around $5000/- were stolen.
The suspect will be charged in Court 26 on 7 September 2012 for an offence of Housebreaking Theft by Day under Section 454 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 which carries a maximum of 10 years imprisonment.
