Parents with unreasonable demands will be dealt with firmly according to the Education Minister's latest direction, The Straits Times reported.

Citing the case of a mother who made a police report against a teacher for snipping her son's hair , Mr Heng Swee Keat said that teachers have to take a "firm stand against unreasonable demands".

He was speaking at the ministry's Work Plan Seminar last week, and said that such incidents made teachers nervous when dealing with parents.

A teacher with more than 20 years of experience who spoke to The Straits Times also said that teachers generally do not approach their principals when encountered with unreasonable parents as they do not want to be seen as weak.

Some school principals told the daily that they have already begun to deal with difficult parents with a firm hand.

Ms Jenny Yeo, principal of South View Primary said that she is no longer intimidated by such parents. She added that if parents want to go to the Ministry with their complaint, she now tells them nicely, "go ahead and the school will explain our side of the story".
