One person was injured and sent to hospital after a fire broke out at Engineering Block E3A of the National University of Singapore (NUS) on Friday afternoon.

At around 4pm, a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) spokesperson said the fire had been placed under control.

No details of the injured person were given.

People in the area reported seeing dark clouds of smoke billowing from the top of the building from around 2:15pm.

According to our onsite reporter, the side of the building is charred black. The area has been cordoned off and everyone has been evacuated.

Fauzan Tarmin, 27, a quality assurance supervisor who tests gas pipes at NUS Seris, said the fire followed exhaust pipes which is why the sides of the building have been charred.

He and other workers were there for a one-week project to test gas pipes when they heard someone shout fire and they quickly ran out of the building.

When contacted, the school said they are looking into the cause of the fire.
