Citizens to get absolute priority in P1 registration balloting

From this year onwards, Singapore citizens will get absolute priority over permanent residents (PRs) in the Primary One registration exercise whenever balloting is necessary, announced the Ministry of Education (MOE) on Sunday.

This means that should the number of applications exceed the number of spaces available, vacancies will now be allotted to all citizens in that phase before PRs, ahead of home-school distance considerations.

Both citizens and PRs will still be eligible for the same phases, and citizens will continue getting two ballot slips for each one received by a PR.

The MOE also announced that seven new schools - three in Sengkang, two in Punggol and one each in Woodlands and Jurong West - will begin taking in students come January 2013.
