The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) has confirmed that a report on a full-time National Serviceman being shot dead during a live firing exercise is a hoax.
The report said that the 19-year-old serviceman had been shot in the right eye by a stray bullet in the Sembawang area and that he had died on Friday.
The Straits Times said the report first surfaced on tech forum Hardwarezone at about 8am Saturday morning, before it was published on the blog and Facebook page of Temasek Revealed.
It went viral on various forums and social networking sites like Facebook by noon, the English daily said.
Mindef said on its Cyberpioneer Facebook page that the rumour was not true.
