According to some people, CNY is a time to dump their pets

Chinese New Year spring cleaning gets out of hand when what is thrown out includes household pets like cats and dogs.

That is why different groups of animal rescuers are being kept busy collecting pets left out in the cold as their owners spring-clean this Chinese New Year.

Among the pooches the volunteers rescued last week were two toy breed dogs tied to a bench at a void deck in Punggol, with a bag of dog food left nearby. Over at East Coast Parkway, a corgi mix was found in the wee hours of the morning. Also abandoned were a silky terrier in Taman Jurong and a golden retriever in Kembangan.

Photos and the plight of these dogs were highlighted on social networking site Facebook. The two toy breed dogs - a poodle cross and a dachshund cross - were found at the Punggol void deck on the Friday before Chinese New Year. Residents told volunteers that they noticed the dogs had been left there for at least five hours without water. A packet of dry dog food was next to them.
