8 dogs rescued from illegal breeders

Eight dogs were rescued from two Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats in Yishun and Bukit Panjang by a group of volunteers.

The volunteer rescuers had followed up on a tip-off that had alerted them to a teenage couple who was illegally breeding dogs for sale without a licence.

They had tracked the girl to her Facebook page where she had posted up the sale of sale of dogs and puppies.

A volunteer, Evelin Ong, 25, posed as a potential buyer and enquired over Facebook about a one-year-old Jack Russell terrier.

She was told by the 16-year-old girl that the dog was tick infested, but the volunteer persisted on seeing the dog.

She was then directed to a flat in Gangsa Road in Bukit Panjang.

When Evelin arrived at the flat with two other volunteers they were shocked to find that the dogs were living in squalid conditions.

The walls of the rental flat were covered in faeces and urine on the walls and that the dogs were undernourished and suffering from skin ailments.

The three volunteers then persuaded the teenager to allow them to take some of the dogs in case of eviction by the landlord.

They took with them two Jack Russell terriers, a Schnauzer and an English cocker spaniel.

The volunteers followed up the visit with another to the teenager's family home in Yishun, where they rescued another four dogs: a Maltese, a Schnauzer and another two Jack Russell terriers.

One of the Jack Russell terriers was pregnant.

Jason Ong, one of the volunteer rescuers claimed that the visit was supposed to be conducted with the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA), however the organisation pulled out and did not give the rescuers any reasons.

The Straits Times however reported that the authorities had informed Mr Ong that they had not agreed to conduct any raid and needed more information before proceeding forward.
