More help for low-income Singaporeans needed: Pasir Ris-Punggol MP

The second day in the week-long Parliamentary debate on the President's Address kicked off at 1.30pm, with Mr Gan Thiam Poh (Pasir Ris-Punggol) urging the Government to do more for lower-income Singaporeans.

Mr Gan noted that the cost of living remains as one of the chief concerns among Singaporeans, particularly as the wages of the bottom fifth of workers have stagnated in the last decade.

Struggling with intense competition and rapid changes brought about by globalisation, 'it is almost as if they are running on a treadmill which has been increasing both speed and incline relentlessly. It seems that all they can do is to keep from falling off,' he said.

Mr Gan urged the Government to continue reducing fees, charges and rentals, citing the removal of the TV licence fee as a good example.
