THE loud barking of the family dog was the first sign that something was wrong in a semi-detached house at Westwood Drive in Jurong West.
When a family member went to the garden to check, they found a toddler unconscious in the fish pond.
They quickly pulled him out of the water and called for an ambulance.
The L-shaped fish pond, believed to be about 30cm deep, was in the front porch area with a small wooden bridge over it.
The police said they were told that a two-year-old boy had fallen into a fish pond at 11.45am on Wednesday. He was taken to National University Hospital unconscious but died at 10.20 that night.
The house belonged to the boy's aunt, who was looking after him but the toddler was in the garden alone when he accidentally fell into the pond.
The father told reporters that the boy was about two years old. While adults were at home at the time, nobody was watching him."He seemed like a playful and cheerful child but he always seemed to be playing alone whenever I saw him," said a neighbour.
