The 35ha site includes a 3,000-capacity multipurpose indoor arena, a water-sports centre and a 6,000-capacity indoor aquatic centre.
The main structure is a 55,000-seater stadium, which features retractable seating that allows for flexibility in hosting different sports, from rugby and football to cricket and track-and-field events.
With the highest point of the roof almost 80m above ground - the equivalent of a 30-storey Housing Board block - the stadium can be easily seen from a distance, said Mr Frederic Perez, construction director of Dragages Singapore.
The project had initially been hit by a series of delays, due to rising construction costs and financing constraints caused by the 2008 economic crisis.
Despite winning the bid in 2007, the consortium could begin construction work only last year.ORIGINAL SOURCE
