Series Of Loanshark Harassment By Fire Cases Solved With Five Arrested

In a Police operation on 20 September 2011, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Police Intelligence Department (PID) arrested five male suspects aged between 13 and 22 for suspected involvement in loanshark harassment.

The suspects are believed to be responsible for several harassment cases committed island-wide, including at least five cases where fires were set at the victims’ residences.

Three of the suspects aged between 17 and 22 will be charged in Court on 22 September 2011 under the Moneylenders Act. The two remaining suspects aged 13 and 15 will be released on bail pending further investigations.

Under the Act, persons found guilty of committing loanshark harassment shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and shall also be liable to be punished with not less than three strokes of the cane.
