Nikon enters mirrorless interchangeable lens market

Camera giant Nikon has finally entered the mirrorless interchangeable lens (MIL) camera market with the Nikon 1.

Unlike conventional digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras that use a pentaprism and mirror, MIL cameras get rid of both to become smaller and lighter. MIL cameras offer a middle ground between light but entry-level compact cams, and powerful but heavy DSLRs.

Nikon cited the growing sales of MIL cameras in markets outside Asia as one main reason why the Nikon 1 cameras are being launched.

The two Nikon 1 models introduced are the V1 and J1. Both sport a 10.1-megapixel image sensor, Nikon's new Expeed 3 image processing engine and a 3-inch LCD display. The J1 is aimed at the consumer market with a built-in flash and comes in five colours of black, white, silver, red and pink.
