About 10,000 midazolam sleeping pills, a substance which affects a person's mental activity and behaviour, controlled under the Poisons Act and used medically to induce sleep or relieve anxiety, were seized by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) in Woodlands on July 26, following an alert from ICA's Air Cargo Command.

Drug addicts have been known to crush these tablets and administered by an injection into the blood as a drug subsitute. Life-threatening respiratory and cardiovascular reactions may be triggered when the drug is used in uncontrolled amounts.

The Singaporean man and the Chinese national hid the sleeping pills in steel flasks and falsely declared the contents of it in trying to evade detection by ICA.

Investigations are ongoing.

If found guilty of importing or selling substances listed in the Poisons Act without necessary licences, they will be fined up to $10,000 and face a jail term of up to two years.
