Only in America: Wily coyote gets head stuck in mayonnaise jar

The coyote, part of a family of six, had been unable to eat or drink since it was spotted July 17 in Rainier Beach, Washington State with a Costco-size plastic mayonnaise jar on its head.

Seattle animal-control authorities had tried to capture the creature last week, first with a trap and then with a catch pole and nets. But the wily coyote was too fast and disappeared into the woods. Other residents had tried to catch it, too.

But on Sunday, its legs were just, perhaps, a little wobbly.

On that day, Roel Garcia and Jeff Bryant were building a stone patio and retaining wall in their back yard on Ruggles Street, near 51st Avenue South in Rainier Beach when they saw the coyote.

"I noticed he had a jar on its head," Garcia said Wednesday. "I told Jeff, my partner: 'We got to get that off.' "

Garcia said the animal looked weak and its rear bones could be seen. He figured it probably hadn't eaten for a while.

Bryant went to the bushes and got to within a couple of feet of the wily coyote, jumped on it and held it down before sliding the jar off its head.

The coyote eventually jumped up and disappeared - again.
