Potong Pasir residents gathered at a void deck of a block yesterday at about 8.40pm to sign a petition calling for a by-election.
A commotion broke out at Block 108 Potong Pasir Ave 1, and police were called to disperse the crowd.
A police spokersperson told the Straits Times that the residents' gathering was illegal and that they were investigating what caused the dispute.
The residents who organised the petition have suspended the drive till further notice and appealed to residents to remain "calm and non-confrontational".
Mr Chiam See Tong's Singapore People's Party (SPP), who himself said that the petition has no legal basis, is not involved in the petition. He and his wife were attending a thank you dinner for volunteers when the petition drive was held.
