Police spokeswoman Susan Usher said the blast occurred at 3am at the Timbertop Caravan Park in Peel Street, Mandurah.

The 48-year-old man, his 16-year-old son, Ben Spies, and 13-year-old daughter Georgia Spies, all received serious burns in the blast. Ben died a short time after being transferred to the Peel Health Campus for treatment.

Ms Usher said it appeared the blast came from within the family's tent. Fire crews attended the scene and extinguished the blaze in about 10 minutes.

"What caused the explosion is being investigated but it appears at this stage it was a gas bottle venting," she said.
