There is a recent article on the use of Internet-inspired abbreviations published in Sunday Times on 27 Mar 2011, entitled 'OMG! Look this up in the dictionary'.
Although these abbreviations have made it into the Oxford English Dictionary, these are generally not accepted in schools here.
The article also includes a column 'lol, teachers wont accept it' which included the opinions of local educators.
