S'pore Slingers stay alive

SINGAPORE - Faced with a must-win situation in the Asean Basketball League semi-final best-of-three series, the Singapore Slingers delivered.

The Singapore outfit posted a 90-76 win over the Chang Thailand Slammers in Game 2 to square the series at one-apiece at the Singapore Indoor Stadium yesterday.

After an agonising 81-76 overtime loss last month in Bangkok, the Slingers kept their title hopes alive with a disciplined display against the Thais. The home side led 18-17 after the first period and went in at half-time 40-35 up. Filipino guard Leonidez Avenido turned it on in the second half, eventually finishing with a game-high 31 points. Point-guard Al Vergara contributed 29 points. Slammers centre Jason Lamar Dixon was the top scorer for the visitors with 19 points.

The Slingers will travel to Bangkok for the decisive Game 3 on Sunday for a spot in the final.
