SINGAPORE: The drive to boost service standards within Singapore's public healthcare sector has reaped some results, with over 2,500 medical staff honoured at the inaugural Singhealth Health Quality Service Awards.
One of those going the extra mile is nurse clinician, Tan Chor Kien.
Many of her patients suffer from blood disorders such as leukemia.
With 20 years of experience, she is always ready to go beyond her duties in comforting them.
"I've got a 17 year old girl who was newly diagnosed with leukemia...and something that she longed for was her dog...I managed to get a pet dog which was as big as half my size, and the moment she saw the dog, she just hugged the dog.
"So wherever possible we as nurses here, even for outpatients follow up, we learn to be sensitive, this is where we want to be (with them) in their journey, at times, we can act as a little light...a spark or glow so that they know that the journey at the end of the day is going to be bright for them."
The award is the first of its kind to recognise service champions in public healthcare.
