Football: Indonesia crush Malaysia in Suzuki Cup opener

JAKARTA: Indonesia crushed Malaysia 5-1 in their opening match of the ASEAN Football Federation's (AFF) Suzuki Cup tournament at Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Wednesday evening.

In the Group A tie, Malaysia opened the scoring through Norshahrul Idlan Talaha in the 17th minute.

Shocked by the early Malaysian goal, Indonesia went on the offensive and equalised when Mohd Asraruddin Putra Omar deflected a shot past Malaysian goalkeeper Mohd Sharbinee Allawee Ramli for an own goal four minutes later.

The Indonesians continued their onslaught, putting another four goals past Mohd Sharbinee with Cristian Gonzales scoring in the 32nd minute, Muhammad Ridwan (51st), Arif Suyono (75th) and Irfan Haarys Bachdim (91st).

In an earlier Group A match at the same venue, last year's runners-up Thailand were held to a 2-2 draw by Laos.

Malaysia next play Thailand on Dec 4 and Laos on Dec 7.
