He slashed a man who tried to break up fight

SINGAPORE - A bouncer was sentenced for a year in jail yesterday for using a chopper and knife to slash a man who had tried to break up a fight.

The incident occurred on Dec 20 last year at 3am. The victim, 28-year-old Mr Kaviraj Krishna, was standing in front of Balestier Complex.

He saw bouncer, Yap Swee Thye, (picture), 40, and a group of pub patrons having an argument.

The argument degenerated into a scuffle.

Yap then went to the basement carpark and returned with a chopper and a knife, which he swung at the group.

Seeing this, Mr Kaviraj tried to intervene but Yap slashed his left forearm with the chopper.

Bleeding, Mr Kaviraj hopped into a taxi and went to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Later, he underwent surgery.

Yap pleaded guilty to the offences.

District Judge Low Wee Ping told Yap: "No matter what they (the pub patrons) were doing, as a security personnel, your job was to call the police and not to use a chopper and slash at one of them.

"This is not a society which Singapore wants."
