Allow NGNBN cabling or face fine, says IDA

SINGAPORE - All building owners, including management committees of private apartments and condominiums, must facilitate the installation of Singapore's Next Generation National Broadband Network (NGNBN) high-speed fibre broadband cables, the InfoComm Development Authority (IDA) reiterated yesterday.

Those who do not comply may face penalties under the Telecommunications Act. Under the Act, the management committees can be fined up to $10,000 or jailed for a maximum of three years or both. They face a further fine of up to $1,000 for every day which the offence continues.

IDA's stance follows recent reports that nine in 10 condo management committees approached by OpenNet, the consortium appointed by the Government to lay the cables, rejected the installation of the requisite fibre-optic cabling, citing mainly aesthetic reasons for their reluctance to comply.
