The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is currently studying basic regulations for third-party booking applications.

While mobile applications such as Uber and GrabTaxi are currently allowed to operate in Singapore without regulation, some basic regulations may be required to protect the safety and interests of commuters.

Third-party booking applications provide commuters and taxi drivers with an additional means of making and accepting bookings, facilitating a more efficient matching of taxis with commuters.

However, the applications do not increase the supply of taxis per se, and will not help during peak hours and inclement weather. The taxi availability framework will still be necessary.

The framework, introduced last year, stipulate the percentage of the operators’ fleet that should ply the roads during peak periods and the minimum daily mileage for each of their cab drivers.
