A Singaporean woman was sentenced to four months in jail on Wednesday (Nov 5) for importing 13 puppies into Singapore without the relevant import permits.

Sharon Tan Mei Hua was also sentenced to one month in jail for animal cruelty. Both sentences will run concurrently.

Her smuggling attempt was foiled on Sep 9 at Woodlands Checkpoint. The puppies were found in black cloth bags under the seats of a Singapore-registered car, as well as in the glove box.

According to a news release from the the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA), “investigation showed that the puppies had been sedated and had not been transported in accordance to AVA’s guidelines, which requires pets to be transported into Singapore in containers that comply with the International Air Transport Association standards”.

The puppies are currently quarantined at AVA’s Sembawang Animal Quarantine Station. AVA said it will rehome the puppies after they have fulfilled the quarantine requirements.
