Some 5,000 senior citizens living in Nee Soon GRC will get subsidised eye screening for the next five years.
This is part of a tie-up between Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and Nee Soon GRC and marks the first time the hospital is working with the grassroots on a mass eye-screening programme. The screening costs S$6, but residents aged above 50 need only pay S$3. The remainder is subsidised by Nee Soon GRC.
Residents will be screened primarily for Age-related Macular Degeneration, a degenerative eye condition that affects part of the retina. It is projected that this condition will affect up to 200 million people globally by 2020 with the prevalence of ageing societies.
Residents will also be screened for other eye conditions like cataract and glaucoma.
