While droves of visitors descend on Singapore for its signature Formula One night race, the Marina Bay area around the race circuit has repeatedly seen poor sales during the F1 weekend due to road closures.

This year, the closures will be over six days, from September 17 to 23.

For the race weekend on September 20 and 21, the road closure would limit vehicle access to shopping malls like Suntec and Marina Square. This year, taxis can access Suntec and Milennia Walk at all times, except when the race is ongoing. Previously, taxis were only allowed in during selected times.

There will also be limited access to certain roads at peak hours. For example, Nicoll Highway and Esplanade Drive will remain open in the mornings from 5.30am to 9.30am, on all days except Sunday.

Mall management at Suntec City will be throwing in a sweetener for shoppers this year. Suntec will offer complementary parking to shoppers who spend at least S$30 at the mall. They will be able to park for free from 10am to 12 midnight on 20 and 21 September. The mall is also holding lucky draws and giving out vouchers over that weekend.

The mall is indeed bucking the trend, as some properties near the race circuit will see increased parking charges during the F1 weekend. At Raffles City, parking will cost S$39.60 - more than double the usual rate of S$17.20 - for eight hours.
