SP Services has filed a police report about emails that claim to provide recipients with refunds on their utilities bills, it said in an advisory released on Thursday (Sep 11). However, the company behind these emails says the refunds are a part of the cashback promotions it offers its members.

SP Services - a member of Singapore Power Group - says it was first alerted about these emails in May, and has since received about 15 inquiries about them. While the sender of these emails is titled “SP Services Offer”, these messages are not from SP Services, its advisory stated.

“Recipients of such emails are advised not to respond to the email, click on the hyperlink or provide their personal information,” said the release. “SP Services would like to assure its customers that no unauthorised access has been made into its systems, and utility accounts and personal information that reside in SP Services’ system have not been compromised.”

The emails are sent by Rivalife, which describes itself as "a membership programme that offers Singaporeans access to lifestyle experiences". Its members pay S$79.99 per quarter to access these offers, and can cancel their membership at any time, the company said.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, Rivalife CEO Gregory Costamagna said: “From time to time, we offer cashback promotions to our members, and SP Services is included in these. The objective is to enhance the benefits of our membership programme by giving direct discounts to our customers on things they do everyday - like paying their utilities bill, go for coffee, buy groceries, etc. We are going to contact SP Services to understand their point of view and in the meantime, we have stopped advertising their brand to our customers."
