A quiet housing estate in Marine Parade was abuzz with activity yesterday after a construction worker found what turned out to be a war relic buried in the ground.
Mr Didar Hosen, 25, was going about his work as usual and was digging up a plot of land at Block 79 Marine Drive with nine co-workers at about 10.45am when he saw a rusty object lying about a metre underground. He then informed his boss about it, who alerted the police.
The police said they received a call for assistance at 1.24pm and established the find to be a war relic when they arrived at the site. The area was cordoned off by the police to prevent passers-by from entering.
The SAF Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Explosives (CBRE) unit safely removed the war relic from the location at 5.35pm, about seven hours after it was discovered.
The police said the public was not in any danger.
The last discovery of a war relic happened earlier this month when a World War II hand grenade was found near Outram Park MRT Station.
Last year, artillery shells were found on Jurong Island and at Punggol Drive.
