Taxi queues at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi international airport will be computerised within a month to end "mafia control" of taxi operations, the Bangkok Post reported.

The reforms are part of the efforts by the National Council for Peace and Order to improve public transport systems.

The chief of the 11th Military Circle, Major-General Nirundorn Samutsakorn, said that the army felt that the first priority in taxi management should be at the airport.

A shake-up of the taxi management at the airport will be good for the country's image and could prevent problems such as overcharging, passengers being left stranded on the road and drivers acting improperly, he said.

Taxi drivers will be required to register in a computer system at the airport and the cab queues will be managed by a card system.

All drivers will have to accept the passengers they get.
