He was in his Mother Tongue class when smoke and bits of joss paper started floating in through the classroom windows.
Blythe Chong, a Primary 5 pupil at West View Primary School, and his schoolmates were evacuated to the school hall. Those with breathing difficulties and histories of asthma were taken to an air-conditioned room.
A fire, which was started in a meshed bin as part of funeral rites on a grass patch next to the Bukit Panjang school and spread beyond, was the cause of the smoke and debris.
Parents were informed of the incident around 4pm. One parent, Ms Linda Inderjit Kaur, 46, said she was pleased that the school kept parents in the loop.
The fire was put out with canvas beaters, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
