An online Islamic sex shop selling condoms, massage oils and perfumes has been launched in Turkey, becoming the first of its kind in the predominantly Muslim country.
The "Halal Sex Shop" website presents its products as being "entirely safe," and in compliance with Islamic norms.
Internet users who enter the site find two different links directing them to separate sections for male and female products.
Other sections of the website are designed to discuss sex in the context of Islam under various headings: "Oral sex according to Islam", "Sex manners in Islam" and "Sexual life in Islam."
The anonymous founders of the website said they believed the online shop would help correct prejudices against Islam which they claimed is perceived as "against sex."

Brunei to introduce sharia law in 2014

Brunei will enforce sharia criminal law next year, the sultan announced today (Oct 22), with possible punishments including stoning to death for adultery and flogging for drinking alcohol.
The law would be enforced from April, said the 67-year-old sovereign, Hassanal Bolkiah, one of the world’s wealthiest people, who has presided over a shift to more conservative Islam and anti-sedition laws in recent years.
Power is concentrated with the monarchy and the country does not hold elections.
“It is because of our need that Allah the Almighty, in all his generosity, has created laws for us, so that we can utilize them to obtain justice,” said the sultan, who also holds the post of prime minister.
Many crimes under the new code have a high burden of proof and sharia court judges would have discretion over punishments, which could also include amputations for theft.
Brunei, which has a population of just over 400,000, already enforces Islamic teachings more sternly than Malaysia and Indonesia. The sale of alcohol is banned and evangelism by other religions is strictly forbidden.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) has identified two dengue clusters in Orchard Road.
The clusters are at the Orchard Gateway construction site and Eber Road/Oxley Rise area.
As at 8.30pm Tuesday, there were 22 dengue cases in those areas.
The first case was reported on 25 September.
The Orchard Gateway construction site near 313 Somerset is a red zone for dengue. Any area with more than 10 dengue cases is considered a red zone or a high risk area.
Authorities say what's known is that at least 15 who came down with dengue are workers at the site, while another three are individuals working near it.
NEA said it cannot confirm if the three individuals had contracted dengue at their workplace or at their residence.
NEA said the contractor will be fined for mosquito breeding and has been warned that NEA may impose a stop-work order if the situation does not improve.

A video showing cameras and what seems to be flashing LED lights on an overhead bridge at Geylang Lorong 16 has caught the attention of netizens online.
Some have speculated that the cameras are a new ERP system, while others thought it was a speed camera.
The authorities have clarified that the cameras are actually one of the initiatives under the Safe City Test Bed Project announced in May.
The project is a partnership between the government and the industry to develop technology that will allow urban cities to optimise resources and better coordinate responses to safety and security threats, urban management concerns and major crises.
For example, authorities would be able to detect an impending flash flood and decide on possible counter measures, while emergency vehicles could monitor traffic conditions on the road to identify the best route to take should there be traffic congestion.

A forgetful British bridegroom who made a hoax bomb threat rather than admit he'd neglected to book the venue for his wedding was sentenced Tuesday to a year in jail.
Neil McArdle called Liverpool's St. George's Hall from a phone booth on his scheduled wedding day in April, claiming a bomb was due to go off in 45 minutes.
His fiancee, Amy Williams, was left standing in the street in her wedding gown while the building was evacuated.
McArdle, 36, was arrested the same day and admitted that he made the call because he had forgotten to fill out the paperwork for the wedding.

A school principal in Patna, India and her husband have been charged with murder after 23 children died from eating pesticide-contaminated lunches in July at the school, police said today (Oct 22).
The trial of Meena Kumari and her husband is expected to begin soon, said police officer Varun Kumar Sinha. They were arrested and could face the death penalty if convicted.
Investigating police officer Raj Kaushal said the principal’s husband, opposition lawmaker Arjun Rai, stored pesticide at the school that was for use at his agricultural farm. The charge sheet filed in a court in Bihar state on Sunday said the chef cooked with it by mistake.
Both denied the charges and told police there was no deliberate act on their part.
The school’s cooks have told authorities that the principal controlled the food for the government-provided free daily lunch. One of the cooks told police investigators that the cooking oil appeared different than usual, but that the principal told her to use it anyway.
The children who died were between ages 5 and 12.

The Committee to Strengthen National Service (CSNS) is looking at ways to make the transition into and after NS smoother by working with polytechnics, junior colleges and universities.
Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said this today (Oct 22), days after leading a delegate comprising CSNS members in a visit to Finland and Switzerland to study their conscription systems.
Dr Ng said both countries are similar to Singapore in terms of population size and the number of men who enlist into NS each year.
The two countries also give servicemen a choice in their vocations to optimise their contributions, and this is something that could be explored in Singapore.
Servicemen may be given some freedom to choose specific units, based on their skills and interests, an expansion of the current three broad choices they are given after their Basic Military Training.
Dr Ng also noted the strong support for national service from employers in Finland and Switzerland, even without incentives.
He said that is because they see the value in the qualities and skills servicemen pick up from their stints.
Dr Ng also said that women have a role to play in the Singapore Armed Forces, even though the country will not move towards full-time NS for women.
Nonetheless, he said the current volunteer scheme — which allows women, new citizens and first-generation permanent residents to contribute — could be expanded.
Women in the military do not undergo Basic Military Training, and contribute in more skills-related roles such as nurses and radiographers.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was at St John's Island to conduct a neutering exercise to help contain a growing stray cat population there. It came across 15 pedigree cats.
The group said the fact they are purebreds suggests they were probably abandoned.
Corinne Fong, SPCA executive director, said: "A lot of them were still unsterilised. We knew that we would have to do it again sooner or later.
SPCA said this could be a result of owners leaving purebreds there.
One pedigree can cost more than S$1500.
Ms Fong said: “If you're talking about Ragdolls and Russian Blues and Persians, they are not there like local cats. I can understand if there are local cats there. But these are purebreds. What are they doing on the island to begin with?
Some animal experts said they are not surprised if people were dumping animals on the islands.
Louis Ng, executive director of Animal Concerns Research & Education Society, said: “You see on Kusu Island, a lot of people are abandoning their tortoises, turtles and terrapins on the island as well, so people are doing this.
Mr Ng added: "Obviously it is cruel to abandon pets. With the cats in particular - they have formed an emotional bond with (the owner) and abandoning them is cruel, unethical as well.
The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore told Channel NewsAsia it will investigate all feedback on animal cruelty - including pet abandonment.
Those found guilty face up to a S$10,000 fine and a year's jail.

The way in which some have tried to push for the wearing of the Muslim headscarf in the workplace was criticised by Chua Chu Kang GRC MP Zaqy Mohamad on Tuesday.
His comments came after an online petition was posted by an anonymous person on Oct 12 on campaigning site avaaz.org. It aimed to garner 20,000 signatures, but received only 12,405 before being taken down recently.
Mr Zaqy expressed concern at how the petition involved astro-turfing, in which fake e-mail addresses can be used to sign up for these causes and make the petition seem like it has more traction than it actually has. Legitimate and constructive avenues should be pursued instead, he added.
Referring to articles this week by The New Paper and Berita Harian on the issue, he wrote on his Facebook page: "It is unfortunate that the petition is now withdrawn under the spotlight. The initiator has not identified himself or herself. So no one knows who initiated it, or whether the response is real."

Singapore aims to be Southeast Asia's yuan hub

Hot on the heels of London, Singapore will be China's next currency trading partner, in addition to the US, Australia and Japan.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said besides direct currency trading, investors in Singapore can channel renminbi from Singapore back into China's securities markets.
Analysts said this further cements Singapore's status as Southeast Asia's yuan hub and the globalisation of China's currency.
Under the move, Singapore-based investors will be able to participate directly in China's onshore capital markets.
Analysts said it also reaffirms the development of Singapore as an offshore renminbi centre, and they are expecting demand for yuan-denominated bonds and other yuan -related products to increase in the coming months.
As the world's second largest economy's currency gains more traction, experts say the competition will inevitably heat up.

Singaporeans unlikely to be deterred by Malaysia's impending GST

Malaysia is widely expected to announce a goods and services tax (GST) this Friday when the government unveils its 2014 Budget.
The impact of the GST on consumer prices is expected to be minimal because Malaysia already levies taxes on finished goods and services. The planned GST of 4 per cent will merely replace the sales tax at 5-10 per cent and the service tax at 6 per cent.
Economists said the GST is unlikely to deter Singapore shoppers, as it will not significantly increase consumer prices in Malaysia. According to the Express Bus Agencies Association, the relative strength of the Singapore dollar will help offset price increases resulting from the GST.
Economists said the GST is a more efficient tax collection system, because it is a tax on value added at all stages of production. Most economists expect the GST to be implemented in 2015.
Other changes expected at the upcoming Budget are property cooling measures. Economists said some of these measures could include higher property gains tax and additional buyers' stamp duty for foreigners.
These are likely to be of interest to Singaporeans, who make up three-quarters of home buyers in the Johor's Nusajaya area.

An Upper Arlington (Ohio) PD officer responding to an armed robbery call struck a vehicle that had just stopped in an intersection, killing all six family members inside, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
Officer Shawn Paynter entered the intersection on a green light with his lights on and sirens blaring. His cruiser struck the family's stationary sedan at full speed.
It was around 1:30 on Friday morning and driver Eid Badi Shahad had reportedly just run a red light with his wife and four daughters, ages 2 to 16 in the car.
It's not clear why he stopped. All four daughters were sitting in the back seat and no one in the car was wearing a seat belt. The couple, who had emigrated as refugees from Iraq three years ago, leaves behind five sons, ages 5 to 16.

A decorated Indianapolis Metro Police officer was shot and killed early Friday after kicking in the door at a domestic call when he heard a woman screaming for help.
Officer Rod Bradway, 41, had responded to Eagle Pointe Apartments at about 2 a.m. with another officer.
When he heard a woman's screams, Officer Bradway kicked in an apartment door.
A man later identified as 24-year-old Steven Byrdo, was hiding behind a door and ambushed the officer. The second officer exchanged multiple rounds with Byrdo, shooting and killing him.
Byrdo was released from prison in June after a conviction for dealing cocaine. He has previous arrests for public intoxication, disorderly conduct, dealing and possession of marijuana, and carrying a handgun without a license, reports the Indianapolis Star.
The woman's 10-month old child was in the home at the time and was unharmed. Officer Bradway leaves behind a wife and two children.

Patrick Goh was 45 years old when he and four partners, all of whom are older than him, decided to start bedding company Intero Enterprise. His age, instead of acting as a deterrent, spurred him to make the move.
"I've always wanted to be an entrepreneur. After so many years, I wanted to do something on my own and chart my own destiny."
Working in the bed-linen business then, Mr Goh and his partners decided that they should put their expertise to good use. Together, the five put in $150,000 to start a wholesaling and distribution bedding business, with $58,000 coming from Mr Goh's own pockets.
Starting out was tough. Said the chief operating officer of Intero: "No financial institution wanted to support us because we had no track record. So we had to be very, very careful with the limited resources available. We had to keep our creditworthiness, otherwise the ripple effect further down the road would be worse."
