Call it human nature. Call it the arrogance of the inebriated, but some errant motorists still insist on driving when they are clearly drunk.
Business development manager Alex Tay, 40, admits that he had been flirting with danger and would likely have continued doing so, had he not been caught last year.
After having six cans of beer and three or four glasses of red wine, he still insisted on driving. When he hit a cab, his wife and their eight-month-old son was in the car.
He had been confident that he could drive safely, but the accident has sobered him up.
But his story is a timely reminder as the festive season is upon us. The police just announced the arrest of drink drivers nine in an island-wide operation.
We need to make it socially unacceptable to drink and drive.
And maybe it is time to consider drastic measures such as reducing the number of parking lots near nightspots as it will force people to cab it there instead.
No car. No drink driving.
