HSA conducting tests for illegal colourants in Chinese medicinal herbs

The Health Sciences Authority of Singapore (HSA) said it is conducting the necessary sampling and testing on three Chinese medicinal herbs, following reports of cancer-causing colourants in them.

HSA said if any of the raw herbs tested positive for illegal substances, it will keep the public informed.

Reports in China and Hong Kong said illegal dyes have been found in corydalis, safflower and saffron.

Wong Chin Nai, president of Singapore Chinese Physicians Association, said: "These are industrial substances after all, it's not right to use them in food. Long-term consumption can harm the liver and kidney, and even cause cancer."
