A fire in Hougang on Sunday night resulted in a power trip and some 100 residents evacuating themselves.

The fire broke out at Block 549, Hougang Street 51.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted to the fire at about 10:30pm and deployed two ambulances, three fire engines and one support vehicle.

Even before firefighters arrived, some 100 residents in the block had evacuated themselves.

No one was hurt though six residents complained of breathing difficulties and were attended to by paramedics on-site.

The fire, which was caused by items placed at the 7th storey staircase landing, was extinguished within 10 minutes. It also affected the power supply to the block.

Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MP Gan Thiam Poh said that the nearby RC and Wellness centres were opened during the incident to allow residents to take temporary shelter and some light refreshments.
