A former endurance racing driver who claims she quit the sport after a fall in a wet hotel lobby left her wheelchair-bound is suing its owners for alleged negligence.

Mrs Pamela Mykytowych, 49, is believed to be claiming up to $1.2 million after she twisted her ankle and suffered injuries to her left knee and back in the fall at the VIP Hotel in Balmoral Crescent on May7, 2011.

She was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for treatment and discharged but there were consequent complications and she now suffers from "complex pain syndrome" - a condition that leads to bouts of pain in different areas of the body.

The 57-room hotel, opened in 1973 near Newton MRT, is disputing her claims and said she is to blame, in court papers filed. A High Court pre-trial conference was held on Wednesday and court hearings are expected in August.

The hotel, in court papers filed, argues Mrs Mykytowych lost her balance because she was careless, failed to wear proper footwear and did not keep a proper lookout which would have alerted her to any water on the floor.

It is understood that some guests would walk through the lobby to their rooms after a swim in the pool and it remains to be settled if any drips from their gear contributed to the wet floor.

Prior to the accident, Mrs Mykytowych was the managing director of her own UK health-care services consultancy.

She was also a successful international endurance racing driver and was the only woman to have successfully completed the Beijing to Paris motorsport rally in 2007 and 2010.

It is understood the damages sought could approximate $1.2 million, including $200,000 in pre- trial earnings loss as well as loss in future earnings and medical costs.

The case is set to the be first where an expert in slip resistance issues, Mr Richard Bowman, will testify.
