The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the Singaporean couple, who were on board the Lion Air flight which crashed into the sea on Saturday, are safe.

Having been given health examinations, they were determined to be physically unharmed and were able to return to their hotel.

The flight was on its way to Bali's Denpasar International Airport from Bandung with 108 people on board when it crashed.

All 108 survived. However, eight of them were hospitalised, with one suffering from a cerebral hemorrhage.

Survivors related that everyone was screaming as the plane came very close to the surface of the sea. When the entire plane fell into the waters, passengers scuffled with one another over life jackets.

The situation was chaotic as many were afraid that the plane would explode. Some had even jumped into the sea and swam to shore before rescuers could arrive to save them.

The Boeing 737 carrier is believed to be new. Estimated to cost around $1.8 million, Lianhe Wanbao reported that it had only been released from the factory where it was manufactured on March 18.

The cause of the crash has not been confirmed. Indonesian authorities said that investigations are still ongoing.

According to Aviation Safety Network, Lion Air flights have been involved in 6 accidents since 2002. The airline has also been banned by the European Union since 2007.
