The families of the eight policemen slain in Lahad Datu yesterday received RM10,000 (S$4,000) each from the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture.

Minister Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim presented a cheque to family representatives of the eight policemen who were killed since the Lahad Datu intrusion erupted early this month.

"The sacrifice of our security forces will never be forgotten as they died protecting our country's sovereignty.

"It is a tragic loss for every Malaysian and their efforts should be honoured," Rais said during the function held at the police training centre in Jalan Semarak.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar thanked Rais for the support shown to the security forces and said it would spur his men to fight harder in maintaining internal security and public order.

"Although there were policemen who fell in the line of duty, but their sacrifices have not been in vain as there have been various parties acknowledging the role that they played in defending the country," Ismail said.
