In a shocking incident, a tea estate owner and his wife were burnt to death yesterday by an unruly group of tea labourers in eastern Assam.

Mridul Kumar Bhattacharya and his wife Rita Bhattacharya were found dead inside their bungalow of MKB Tea Estate in Tinsukia district of the State on Wednesday evening. Their bodies were severely charred.

It is understood that the owner Bhattacharya,75, had a dispute with a section of tea labourers, following which the angry workers gathered in front of his residence.

According to eyewitnesses, Bhattacharya had a heated argument with nearly 1000 agitating workers which turned violent and the labourers set fire to his house after locking him and his wife inside the bungalow.

The angry mob even formed a ring around the bungalow to prevent police officials and fire brigade vehicles to approach the burning site.

Unconfirmed source claims that the agitators even assaulted the charred body of Bhattacharya after it was recovered from the debris.

This was not the first time that Bhattacharya had rubbed the labourers the wrong way. He was arrested two years ago for allegedly firing upon a teenager at the Rani Tea Estate on the outskirts of Guwahati.
