MAN WHO GOES ASTRAY AND THEN GOES AWOL: After Member of Parliament for Hougang Yaw Shin Leong was expelled by the Workers’ Party following allegations of extramarital dalliances, he skipped town and is apparently gallivanting around Asia.
MAN UP — IF YOU DO THE CRIME, YOU GOTTA DO THE TIME: Famous plastic surgeon Woffles Wu, 52, got into trouble for getting an elderly employee, 82 (!), to take the fall for his speeding tickets. Wu was fined S$1,000.
SAY ‘NO’ TO A YOUNG MAN AND WATCH HIM MESS UP: Joseph Schooling, 17, found himself in the deep end after failing to show up for his 200m butterfly heats with the correct gear. Minutes before his Olympic debut in London, officials said “nay” to his swim cap and goggles. It was downhill from there. Schooling finished last. Apparently, he tweeted: "Right before I had to swim the officials tell me I can't use TYR... thanks for messing my swim."
MAN WHO DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE: Ferrari driver Ma Chi (pictured above) crashed into a taxi at 178km/h, killing himself, as well as the cabby and the passenger in the taxi. The horrific crash was caught on video by another taxi driver, who narrowly escaped death. The incident sparked outrage in Singapore where people were already seething with discontent at China nationals (Ma was one), at people who are rich and earn too much (Ma also seemingly fit the bill), and at the Government for letting in too many foreigners / fast cars (whichever helped them vent their anger).
BEHIND EVERY WOMAN IS A MAN OF MEGA FAITH: City Harvest Church founder and pastor Kong Hee (L) and senior members of the megachurch in Singapore have been charged with misappropriating at least S$20 million in church funds, some of which were allegedly diverted to support his wife Ho Yeow Sun’s (R) singing career which required her to live in the US.
MAN WITH A BLACK BOOK THAT TURNED 51 FACES RED: We’re just guessing about the red faces because some of them were obscured by bags and other useful household items as the men made their way in and out of the Subordinate Courts to face charges. Tang Boon Thiew (pictured) is alleged to be the pimp who ran a website for sex services that these men tapped. He has been charged with living off the earnings of prostitutes. His case is set to be heard in early January 2013.
MAN WHO WAS NOT JUST MARKING PAPERS: Former secondary school teacher Seow Swee Hong, 39, was jailed nine months for filming up the skirts of women and girls with his mobile phone. The victims of his 94 offences included students at the school where he was teaching. Some of Seow’s offences took place at the school and some at Popular bookstore.
MAN WHO WAS NOT JUST MARKING PAPERS II: A former science teacher at a secondary school Bertrand Ngien Wen Tseah (pictured), 37, was jailed a year for filming girls in the school’s toilet with stealthily placed pinhole cameras. He also tried to destroy the evidence when he realised that he had been caught, by sneaking into a room in school to remove the memory cards from the cameras, throwing them into a canal and then binning the school laptop issued by the Ministry of Education from his home. Ngien reportedly suffers from schizophrenia.
MAN DETERMINED TO PROVE HE ONLY MARKED PAPERS: National University of Singapore (NUS) law faculty’s Associate Professor Tey Tsun Hang (R), who was once a district judge, faces corruption charges for allegedly getting it on with a student in exchange for better grades. He is also accused of receiving various gifts from the young woman, including shirts, an iPod Touch and a Montblanc pen. He has claimed that he had been coerced into signing the confessions.
TRYING TO BE BIG MAN ON CAMPUS: National University of Singapore (NUS) law student’s explicit sex blog gets him his 15 minutes of fame. “I like to be famous”, said the blogger. There’s no need to name him here because his 15 minutes are up. Incidentally, his ASEAN scholarship is now history as well.
MAN WHO LIKES YOUNG GIRLS: Former Ministry of Education scholar Jonathan Wong Wai Kheong, 25, a diagnosed paedophile, was jailed five years in July. His offences? Committing indecent acts and having sex with a minor, who was 15 at the time. Some of the offences took place at staircase landings of public housing flats – seemingly the location of choice for people in Singapore who want to have dangerous sex. Wong was expelled by the University of York and his scholarship was revoked after he was caught possessing child pornography in the UK.
WHEN A MAN (SORT OF) LOVES A WOMAN: Former Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) director Ng Boon Gay says he loved Cecilia Sue maybe six or seven on a scale of 10. The two of them, though, certainly get 10 out of 10 for keeping the court-going public titillated. With those queues to get into the public gallery, you would think Justin Bieber was making an appearance…
BUS RAGE MAN: Ong Kok Hao, 25, (pictured with scarf around his neck) allegedly got mad with a 76-year-old woman for pressing the bell at the last minute and shoved her off the bus after yelling at her. A video of the altercation went viral and Ong has been charged for causing hurt.
MEN (NOT) AT WORK: More than 150 bus drivers from public transport operator SMRT refused to work to protest against unsatisfactory pay and living conditions. The strike by the China nationals – of which 29 were sent home, one was jailed and four are being prosecuted (pictured above) – came after months of sporadic strikes by the Circle Line. And North East Line. And North-South Line. And East-West Line. To add insult to injury, the bus drivers’ act of taking matters into their hands might even have inspired the sit-in by two disgruntled workers who refused to get down from two 10-storey-high cranes for hours, only to be told that the police wanted to talk to them about criminal trespass.
MAN WHOSE PAST CAUGHT UP WITH HIM: A woman from Shanghai showed up, claiming that Channel 8 actor Terence Cao is the father of her 19-month-old child. A DNA test has confirmed it and Cao’s lawyer says that “he is happy to know that he is a father”, Channel NewsAsia reported. Wait till he sees the child maintenance figures.
MAN WHO DIDN’T WRITE THE BOOK ‘POLITICAL SUICIDE’: On 12 December, Michael Palmer resigned as Speaker of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Punggol East over his affair with a People’s Association employee Laura Ong, barely a day after his US-based namesake, who is a doctor and bestselling novelist, released a medical and political thriller entitled 'Political Suicide'.
