A man opened fire Friday inside two classrooms at the Connecticut elementary school where his mother was a teacher, killing 26 people, including 20 children, as youngsters cowered in corners and closets and trembled helplessly to the sound of shots reverberating through the building.

Conn. Gunman Went To School To Kill Mother
Authorities have identified Adam Lanza as the 20-year-old gunman who fatally shot 26 people, including his mother, at a Connecticut elementary school on Friday morning.
Lanza apparently went to Sandy Hook Elementary School to kill his mother, Nancy Lanza, a kindergarten teacher. After arriving, he headed to his mother's classroom and opened fire. Many of the casualties were inside this classroom, reports ABC News.
Police Release Dispatch Audio of Conn. Shooting
Police and fire units responding to Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday detained what they said was a juvenile suspect, located the shooter's weapons, and began setting up an incident command center, according to dispatch audio.
A brief audio clip of this communication between local police and fire first responders was posted at RadioReference.com. The clip is listed at 18 minutes, 34 seconds, but cuts out at six minutes, 10 seconds. Officers with the Newtown (Conn.) Police Department can be heard in the clip.

Details continue to emerge from today’s tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
As of the writing of this piece, police report 26 people have been killed with at least 18 children dead. The alleged gunman is 24-year-old Adam Lanza, who killed his mother, a teacher at the school.
This event occurred just days after a deadly mall shooting outside of Portland, Oregon, where a 22-year-old man opened fire in the busy food court, killing two and severely injured another before taking his own life.
Obama: 'Our Hearts Are Broken' for Conn. Victims
Obama said he reacted to the incident not as a president but as a parent. Often pausing to get through his remarks, Obama pledged "meaningful action" to prevent such future killings, perhaps hinting at future legislation.
"The majority of those who died today were children—beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old," Obama said. "They had their entire lives ahead of them—birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own."
