Pentax Ricoh has launched the K-5 II, the Pentax’s flagship full-frame DSLR, together with the diminutive mirrorless Q10, both of which are incremental updates to earlier models of Pentax cameras.
The K5 II - The rugged flagship of Pentax Ricoh's DSLR line
The Pentax K-5 II is an update of the original K-5. The camera maintains the ergonomics and feel of its predecessor with its lightweight, but durable magnesium-alloy body in the best Pentax tradition of tough-as-old-boots durability. The new SAFOX AF sensor sticks with the 16.3 megapixel resolution, but is said to perform better in low light conditions. The liveview autofocus mode has a quirk of zooming in on subjects while focusing, which we found cumbersome. We suspect it may cause problems when shooting objects that are moving around a lot.

The Pentax Q10 is an update to the Q, launched in 2011. It sports construction and features that are virtually identical to those of its older sibling: A tough magnesium body, an extendable flash arm, and interchangeable lenses. The outer body, however, has seen a few tweaks to its design so that it is easier to grip. The 12.4 megapixel image sensor has also been upgraded. The inbuilt flash on the unit is surprisingly robust in its construction, and fires off uncharacteristically strong blasts for a camera that small.

No news yet on when the two will officially reach our shores, nor to what extent they will dent the wallet, but we suspect it will arrive in the next quarter. Stay tuned for further updates and reviews.
