The New York Police Department (NYPD) will be doubling the size of its gang unit to combat a surge in social media-fuelled violence.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly is to unveil the plan at a law enforcement conference in San Diego today.

Mr Kelly says the NYPD will increase the number of detectives in its gang unit from 150 to 300. He says the reinforcements will focus largely on loosely affiliated groups of teens who trade dares and insults on Facebook.

Mr Kelly added that the groups are not like traditional street gangs involved in drug dealing, but are mostly concerned with protecting turf.
