Some heartening news for readers chilled by the closure of big bookstores such as Borders and PageOne over the last two years - major retailer Books Kinokuniya is opening a new outlet next year.

The Japanese bookstore chain's fourth store in Singapore will be at Jem, a new mall near Jurong East MRT that is slated to open in the second quarter of next year. The new bookshop will be twice the size of Books Kinokuniya's 3,000 sq ft outlet in Bugis Junction and will carry books in English, Chinese and Japanese.

This will be Books Kinokuniya's first new outlet in 10 years and its first out of the city centre. There are no plans as yet for further expansion into heartland areas, according to a spokesman.

The news comes not long after several major books retailers here threw in the towel - Borders exited its Wheelock Place and Parkway Parade outlets last year, Popular Holdings' Harris bookstores are down to a single store at 313 Somerset after closing their Jurong Point and Great World City outlets, while in February, art and design bookstore Page One shut its sole Singapore store at Vivocity.
