A Malaysian man has offered to sell one of his kidneys for RM50,000 (S$20,000) to settle his gambling debts even though he has been told it is illegal.

The 45-year-old lorry driver from Ampang, who wanted to be known only as Phuah, said his wife had left him and he had been sacked from his job. With RM5,000 debt on his head incurred after a spell of gambling on the internet, Mr Phuah walked into Malaysia Chinese Association Public Services and Complaints Department with his request on Wednesday.

"I keep on telling him that it is illegal and no doctor in Malaysia will perform this surgery for him. If he tries going overseas to do it, the surgeon might even end up taking two kidneys or other organs," said department chief Michael Chong.

Mr Phuah said after paying off his debts, he is going to use the rest of the money to start a business.
