The newly refurbished market and food centre at Blk 16 Bedok South Road reopens today after eight months of upgrading.
Business will resume progressively as more stalls complete their renovation works, said the National Environment Agency (NEA) in a statement today.
The food centre, which is known for Hill Street char kway teow, cuttlefish kang kong and hand-made fishballs for Teochew noodles, first opened in 1975.
Improvements to the 37-year-old hawker centre cost a total of $5.6 million and include increased seating capacity from 202 tables to 230 tables, and widening of passageways. Tray-return facilities will also be installed in the coming months.
To improve ventilation at the centre, all cooked food stalls are equipped with new mechanical exhaust systems. NEA also introduced special roof designs to maximise airflow, as well as energy-efficient measures to optimise natural lighting to reduce energy consumption.
Other key features of the upgrading include improvements made to the electrical, lighting, plumbing and sanitary systems, as well as upgraded toilet facilities and fire safety provisions.
Natural greenery and benches have been furnished at the courtyard within the centre to serve as a common space.
