A group of thieves, believed to be from the notorious Oxy Gang, cut into an ATM at Tabung Haji building in Bangi, a small town in Selangor state, and escaped with RM250,000 (S$100,470).

The theft was believed to have been carried out between 2.30am and 4.20am on Sunday, the Star newspaper reported.

The "Oxy Gang" got its name from the thieves' method of breaking into the thick shell of ATMs with oxy-acetylene torch. The group is alleged to be behind a string of similar robberies in Malaysia amounting to losses of about RM1.3mil in cash.

Selangor CID chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mohd Adnan Abdullah said several passers-by spotted smoke coming from a bank and called the Fire and Rescue Department at about 4.20am.
