The incident took place at a unit at Block 119, Pasir Ris Street 11, last Thursday afternoon. A police spokesman said they received a call for help at 2.50pm.

The male victim, known only as Mr Chen, 27, an administrative assistant, survived the attack with head injuries.

Mr Chen said he was awakened when his flatmate was allegedly rummaging through his belongings, reported Shin Min Daily News.

Suspecting his flatmate was trying to steal from him, Mr Chen questioned him.

The flatmate then allegedly grabbed a hammer and hit Mr Chen on the head.

Said Mr Chen: "I immediately ran out of the flat and ran down the stairs. A passerby who saw the state I was in helped call the police and an ambulance."

Mr Chen was afraid his flatmate would give chase, but the flatmate locked himself in the flat, emerging only when the police arrived.

A 21-year-old man was arrested and police investigations are ongoing.

Shin Min Daily News reported that a hammer was recovered at the scene.

Mr Chen was conveyed to CGH and eventually discharged on the same evening.

He said he was not on familiar terms with the flatmate who allegedly attacked him as he got to know the man only recently. He added that at the time of the attack, the man was the only other person in the flat.
