While the Korban ritual will continue this year, it will be at a higher price for the Muslim community.

This year, about 2,200 sheeps will be imported from Australia for the ritual during Hari Raya Haji.

But at S$465 per animal, it's S$22 higher or 5 per cent more compared to last year.

According to the Singapore Mosques Korban Committee (JKMS), the price increase is because of new regulations set by the Australian authorities.

Sixteen audited mosques have successfully complied with the requirements under the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) as required by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) of Australia.

Despite the higher cost, the Muslim community said it's lower than expected.

S'pore Mosques Korban Committee's chairman Mohd Saat Matari said: "In fact, we heard from the community that they'd rather have korban in Singapore. That's more important than the price. We also heard that they're expecting the price to be higher than S$500 and we managed to get this price which is better than the expectation."

The ritual will only be conducted over two days due to the smaller number of mosques participating. Muslims who wish to conduct Korban can register their names at the 32 mosques islandwide.
