Her routine trip to an open-air market in Johor Baru ended with a smashed car window and a stolen handbag.
But the 45-year-old Singaporean nurse, who wanted to be known only as Madam Hanny, had a camera installed in her car, and it managed to capture the culprits' faces.
The footage has been handed over to the police in Malaysia.
The incident happened on June 30.
Madam Hanny had left her home in Taman Jurong to go to Pasar Tani Larkin with her mother, elder sister and eldest son.
She has been going there at least once a month for the last 10 years.
The group arrived there at 7.15am and parked their car, a seven-seater Hyundai Santa Fe, along the two-way road at Larkin Stadium, together with other Singapore-registered cars.
After shopping, the family returned to the vehicle with their groceries around 9am.
Madam Hanny's mother opened the car door and was about to enter the vehicle when she let out a small shout.
Glass was shattered all over the car seat, and all that was left of the rear window on the right side of the car was a gaping hole.
Said Madam Hanny: "I was shocked. I've heard of such cases, but I never thought it would happen to us."
Gone was her RM800 (S$320) handbag, which contained her work documents, a thumbdrive, and spectacles.
She said her son then ran around the area looking for the bag.
"He thought they might have thrown it away..." she said.
Passers-by also helped them to look for it. But after a while, the family gave up.
They drove to JB Central to make a police report at around 11am.
Said Madam Hanny: "The police took a few pictures of our car and placed some powder around the window area to search for fingerprints."
She did not mention the camera at that time.
The family then returned to Singapore, eager to view the footage.
They found out that the theft took place just 10 minutes after they had left the vehicle.
The camera, which was attached to the front mirror, captured what happened in front of the car.
The footage showed three men circling the cars parked along the road before stopping at Madam Hanny's.
She suspected it was because they had seen her handbag, which she had left on the floor at the back of the driver's seat.
She said she had put a pillow over the bag to block it from view.
"It must have caught their attention. We had about RM100 and DVD players in the car, but they weren't touched," she said.
One of the three men then stood at the front of the vehicle, while the other two smashed the car window.
Stuffing the handbag in a garbage bag, the trio then quickly took off.
The whole episode lasted about 10 minutes.
